Meeting on 5th September 2013

Dear fellow Toastmasters,

Having a wonderful meeting on Thursday, 5th of September with our experienced toastmaster, Azizah Abu Hassan, DTM, as our TOE, we would like to share some of the highlights with some of you  who could not attend the meeting.

Meeting Theme : Leadership by Example.

We had a special guest all the way from Singapore, Michael Rodrigues,DTM, who is the Past District 80 Governor. He has even taken the role of General Evaluator and participated at the Table Topic Session.

The meeting started with Invocation by Goh Guat Mui, ACG,ALB

We only had two prepared speeches, one was given by Erik Wee,CC who started his first project with his ACB manual and the other one was by Debra de Souza Watters, ACS,ALB who was going to complete her 40th speech.

Erik with his speech title Stress-OUT has made a great, funny and refreshing presentation supported by some visual presentation (please refer to our facebook page to see some of Erik's photos while making the presentation)  while offering us some tips on how to avoid being over stressed. He was acting as someone from the management who was briefing his staff and sharing his own experience on how to deal with the stress. Followed by a Q&A session which he handled in a very professional manner. To quote some tips from many other tips offered by Erik :
- Love and enjoy your job...
- Manage the stress or the stress manages you...

Debra Watters who is known to all of us as a great, powerful and an entertaining speaker was supposed to re-produce a well known speech from a famous speaker / public figure. Debra has wisely chosen one of the speeches by Princess Diana about " Women & Mental Health".
The speech was emphasizing on how women will cope in any kind of situation, through sickness of their children and unemployment of their husbands, for example. That it takes an enormous courage to admit that they can't cope and frequently they will try to cope and handle the situation and fall into depression. That their suffering often goes unseen. The speech was a call to society to help to give them (the women) back their rightful mentally healthy life.

After listening to two very impressive speakers, we had 'Mind Your Language' session by Debra de Souza Watters. Here are some examples of what we have learned :
- Hey Bro !...Eaten already ?   -------> Have you had (your) lunch ?
- Can you take chilli ?  ----------------> Are you accustomed to eating spicy food ?
- We shifted to next door.  -----------> We moved next door.
- Never ON or OFF the light. -------> Switch ON or switch OFF the light.

Our Table Topics Master, Joshua Ling, ACB,CL has prepared  a couple of very interesting topics to give some of our members the opportunity to speak :

1.Mr. Lau : Happiness depends on us.
2.Tan Mei Fang,CC : By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.
3.Ahmad Yusof, ACB,CL,  : Be yourself and don't compare of a bit.
4.Ong Hao Yii : Everything has beauty but not everyone sees beauty.
5.Jennifer Lee,ACB,CL : It is only by giving that we will receive
6.William Lee, CC : An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.
7.Michael Rodrigues,DTM : You must do the thing you can not do.

BEST TABLE TOPICS SPEAKER:  Michael Rodrigues,DTM.

Hope to see all other members who could not attend this last meeting on our next meeting, on Thursday, 19th September 2013 with our Past President (2011-2012) Mak Chee Kin as our Toastmaster of the Evening.
